I just recently learned of Cal’s passing and would like to extend belated sympathy to his family. Although we were both from Wichita and both worked for Boeing, we didn’t meet until we moved to Metairie to work on the Apollo program. Four of us carpooled together for a period of time. I still remember how cramped it was on Cal’s day to drive as he had a VW Bug. Although we were not in the same group, we were in close proximity for the duration of the program. I was well aware of his engineering expertise and enjoyed his friendship. Although we came to Seattle at about the same time, we worked in different areas so our contact was less frequent but whenever our paths would cross, we always had a good visit.

I met Cal in the CAP. We shared many good times flying, working with the cadets and just hanging out telling “hanger stories”. Cal was an Inspiration in so many ways and his influence and example has help guide me throughout my career as a professional aviator. His passing deeply saddens me. although we haven’t spoken for quite a while I will miss hearing his thoughtful words of encouragement in my memories.
To Lori and his family. I am so sorry for his loss and wish to express my deepest condolences

Calvin Lee Wilkinson, named after the middle names of his paternal and maternal grandfather ‘s middle names. Grew up in the age of barnstormers, in the “Air Capital of the World”, which fostered a lifelong love of flying and earned him the nickname “Captain” from his family. Bedridden at the age of six with polio and told he might never walk without crutches gave him the drive to succeed when others told him he could not. Always active; a gymnast in HS, football player in college, runner and handball competitor as an adult kept him youthful and vigorous. Attending college while working full time, marriage brought him four sons, pursuing a 40 year career with Boeing took him from Wichita to New Orleans to Seattle. In Seattle he finally attained his goal of owning a plane. Meeting Lori, also a pilot, and marrying her “in flight” with whom he traveled the world. He was my big brother and hero. I will miss his counsel but he left guidelines to which I will attempt to follow til we meet again. Having shed his physical limitations I know he’s doing barrel rolls in the clouds.

Great pilot and mentor as I flew with Cal as his observer when I was member of GRCS. We re connected when I was at Eglin AFB when I headed to Fairchild for my last assignment and how wonderful it was to see Cal and Lori at my 1st wing conference in Bellingham, WA in 2005. Well Im sure you and Paula will have some stories to tell along with Tom.
